Mary Magruder Katz is a criminal defense lawyer in Miami. She's used to being busy. She's used to clients who may or may not be innocent. She's not really accustomed to working for a judge who is under investigation for the way she handled some drug cases. This has the potential to make Mary's life very interesting.

Her boyfriend Carlos Martin asks her for a favor, a legal favor. No problem, she's done legal work for him and his very extended family before. This time, it's a bit much. One of his cousins has been arrested for terrorism and Mary can't even FIND this kid, much less defend him. The negative PR and the crank calls are killing her.

Then Carlos presents with a problem of his own, something to do with contracts and his development business. Lots of money at stake, and possibly some connections with an informant who was gunned down in the street. This means there is almost certainly some danger involved somewhere along the line.

Levenson has written an engrossing novel about the realities of being a criminal defense lawyer. Perhaps in real life, the packages aren't all wrapped up as neatly in the end, but the process is probably pretty close to the truth. She manages to convey some outrage about current anti-terrorism practices without getting out a soapbox. She handles the problems that arise when love and business overlap, and she does it believably. It's unrealistic to expect that all criminal defense attorneys solve cases; Levenson manages to make Katz's investigations seem a natural part of how she handles her cases. JUSTICE hands the reader a plausible main character, who reacts in ways that aren't incredibly stupid to the challenges that confront her. What's not to like?
