Charlie McNally is right where she wants to be. Her job is going well. Her boyfriend just proposed, and his daughter is very happy about that. She's got a hot new lead on a great story. What could possibly go wrong?

Charlie gets offered a job in New York. She's not supposed to tell anyone about it, for reasons having to do with politics at work. She's not sure what she wants to do about it, so she doesn't want to tell Josh because this will probably have a big effect on their marriage plans.

Josh went to Bexter, a private school. Penny, the daughter, is headed to Bexter. Charlie has to meet all the Bexter people, because she's going to be part of the Bexter crowd due to her relationship with Josh and Penny. Someone at Bexter has been sending nasty letters, and two of the elderly women who've been at Bexter forever have recently died. Charlie's reporter instincts really want to look into this, but Josh doesn't want to rock any boats.

Then Charlie's hot new story starts leading back to Bexter, and to people with big money. And somewhere along the line, she's promised Josh, "No secrets." Charlie has problems here. Big problems.

This is Ryan's fourth in the McNally series. Her plotting gets better, as does her ability to inject a social issue without getting all preachy. As usual, Charlie has a major personal issue in this book. As usual, I have a hard time with this part. One would think that by now, Charlie would have figured out how to separate her personal life and her professional life. Apparently not. It's difficult to believe that this issue hasn't come up before; Charlie's been an investigative reporter for a long time. This can't be all that new to her. Secrets are her stock in trade, after all. And again, that's my only quibble with DRIVE TIME. I'll get over it or I won't. But I'll keep reading Ryan. She's good.
