Start with "extra-curricular" activities of some former presidents and former congressmen – some of whom wanted to be president – add a dash of Watergate, a dab of PC, and a soupçon of "What if…" and you have the makings of a real page-turner. This is what David Baldacci has so masterfully done.

Dan Cox is a very charismatic president who is campaigning for re-election. Jane, his charming but forceful – and smarter – wife, must try to protect her husband and his political career at all costs. When her niece is kidnapped shortly after a birthday party at Camp David, and the niece's mother is killed in the process, everyone is focused on whether the events were actually aimed at the President.

Sean King and Michelle Maxwell, former Secret Service agents who are now private investigators are hired by the First Lady to find the niece, in spite of the fact that the FBI is actively working the case. This is difficult to do even after the First Lady intervenes and forces the FBI and Secret Service to cooperate fully. Adding to the suspense is the fact that Michelle's mother is also murdered shortly after the kidnapping.

Sam Quarry, a 68- year-old veteran of Vietnam, has his own axe to grind and a resolution to seek. The genius and complexity of his plan urges the reader onward with sharp turns of suspense and drama almost on every page. All in all, a very satisfying follow-up to SIMPLE GENIUS, where King and Maxwell made their last appearance.
