You know you just have to be in the mood for certain books …. I'd been on a Scandinavian crime fiction jag, so I was just about ready for Stephanie Plum. And, as usual, if you're a fan of Janet Evanovich, you'll know just what to expect.

At one point Stephanie gives Morelli an account of her day: "Blew up a fuel depot, stole twelve rockets and made off with them in a stolen van, got kidnapped by a maniac, and had dinner with a guy who farted fire." Which just about sums the book up.

PLUM SPOOKY is one of the 'between the numbers' books in Evanovich's series, and to be honest there's not that much difference between it and the numbers stories. The main addition is that of Diesel, the weird and possibly psychic investigator who simply adds more confusion to Stephanie's already fraught love life.

Elsewhere, there's Diesel's spooky cousin Wulf, more monkeys than you can shake a stick at, and Morelli's no-good brother putting a spoke in Joe and Stephanie's relationship. And somewhere in there are three bail-jumpers, including the physics genius Martin Munch, whom our heroine needs to haul to a police station pretty sharpish.

The most laughs and mayhem come from the deadly double act of Lulu and Stephanie who can foul up any job they turn their hands to. Lulu gets all the best lines again – particularly when she makes some discoveries about reluctant fiancé Tank. If you're hoping for Grandma Mazur to muscle in on the action, she appears only briefly (but has some killer lines as always).

PLUM SPOOKY tramples along very happily with the subtlety of a herd of rampaging elephants. If you're an Evanovich fan, you'll want to read it. If you aren't, best to steer clear, as it won't convert you to the cause.
