Meg Gardiner is an American living in London. Her Evan Delaney books, centered on China Lake, the Naval Weapons Testing facility in the high desert of California, have never been published in the US until now. Signet is reprinting all five this summer and autumn.

In the first of the series, CHINA LAKE, Evan is taking care of her nephew, Luke, while her brother, Brian, an F/A-18 pilot, is on deployment to an aircraft carrier at sea. She has full custody of the boy, since Tabitha, Brian's wife, left him to join a cult eight months previously.

Peter Wyoming, of the Church of the Remnant, has come to town. He is causing a disturbance at the funeral of Evan's friend, Claudine Girard, a Haitian academic and AIDs activist. Wyoming hates and fears infection, especially AIDs and is vicious about pursuing those he thinks are part of the conspiracy to spread disease among true believers. What is even more disturbing is that Tabitha is a member of this cult and has come to take Luke into the church. Luckily, Brian's deployment is about up and he will soon be returning to China Lake. Until he does, however, Evan must protect the child.

Evan and Brian grew up in China Lake. Their father was also Navy. What they don't realize is how deep The Church of the Remnant is embedded in this small community. And when Pastor Pete is found dead, they finally understand what they are up against.

CHINA LAKE came out in England in 2002 but its themes are universal. It doesn't seem dated, and if some of the military details are a bit inaccurate, only those stationed at China Lake would know. It's about time that Gardiner got some respect in the country of her birth. I plan to read all the books in the series this time around.
