PI Garrett has been hiding out at home while winter raged outside. Now he is pulled from his warm house to help his friend and occasional employer, Max Weider, who is having trouble on the construction site of his new theater. Knowing Garrett's weaknesses, Max sends his daughter Alyx and Garrett's current girlfriend, Tinnie Tate, to persuade him - Garrett is a sucker for a pretty face. Weider has begun a new venture in the world of entertainment. While he makes the best beer in TunFaire, he believes a theater will supply him with a captive audience clamoring for his brew.

Sadly, The World is starting to appear to be more trouble than it's worth. Construction is not complete and Weider fears they are behind schedule. As the construction site seems to be haunted by very large flying bugs and a ghost, it is easy to see why progress is slow. Everyone admits to seeing the bugs and a couple of people claim to have been attacked by them. No one admits to seeing the ghost but the rumor of its existence continues. Garrett decides to attack the issue of the bugs first by using rats and the rat-people. Unfortunately the situation is more dangerous than he can image. These bugs seem to have disturbed something in the ground and if this creature has truly come to life, it could destroy TunFaire completely.

Garrett, with the assistance of his Loghyr partner, The Dead Man, must learn who created the bugs and then let them loose in the city. They must also determine why the people living on the Hill (the rich side of town) are interested in this; why Lurking Felhske, a well-known spy, is following Garrett's every move; and why the police are so interested in Garrett's investigation. And finally they must learn what is sleeping under the construction area and if this creature is truly fully awake or if they can convince it to go back to sleep.

CRUEL ZINC MELODIES is the 12th book in the PI Garrett series. This series has grown a lot since its beginnings. In the beginning, TunFaire was still involved in a seemingly unending war that had many similarities to the war in Vietnam. Now the war is over and TunFaire is attempting to redefine itself and its place in the world.

In many ways, TunFaire's reinvention of itself parallels Garrett's own redefinition. Garrett moves from the wounded soldier with superficial relationships to a private investigator with meaningful relationships. While Garrett is still quite capable of acting childishly, he is finally beginning to grow up and face the complications around him.

An unusual combination of noir and fantasy elements, the Garrett series is likely to appeal to fans of both genres.
