Thea Kozak, crisis specialist with EDGE consulting, gets a phone call on Sunday night from her partner, Suzanne. There's a problem at a posh private school in New Hampshire. A black female basketball player claims she is being stalked and the headmaster, Todd Chambers, wants to send a letter to parents saying that Shondra Jones is delusional and nothing is happening at the school. Thea is still in the honeymoon stage of marriage to a Maine State trooper, homicide detective Andre Lemieux, so she is reluctant to leave, but she goes down to New Hampshire out of a sense of duty. Chambers want Kozak to rubber stamp the letter he and his wife have framed but Thea will do no such thing, She wants a complete investigation, despite the fact that Shondra has accused Alasdair MacGregor, grandson of St Matthew's largest benefactor, of being the stalker. Thea and Todd can come to no understanding, so the next day, Kozak returns home, only to be called back to the campus the following weekend because a body, assumed to be that of Alasdair, has been found on a pile of smoldering leaves, burned beyond recognition, and Shondra's brother, also a student at St. Matthew's, has been found trying to pull the body from the fire It's been ten years since I last read a Thea Kozak book. She is a strong woman and her personality pervades the book to the detriment of some of the other characters. Shondra Jones, a black minority scholarship student in an unfamiliar milieu, acts as one would expect her to. Despite her size, she is lonely and scared but tries not to show it. I am glad that Jim Huang has brought Thea back. Some series just die before they have run their course. I hope The Mystery Company publishes more new fiction, sooner rather than later.
