Detective Sergeant Diane Fry and Detective Constable Ben Cooper are stumped by two brutal, and yet separate, crimes in England’s Peak District. First, A reclusive woman, Rose Shepherd, is killed at her home in England’s Peak District by persons unknown in what appears to be a professional hit. The people in town are not much help. Ms. Shepherd kept to herself and she rarely left her home. The police do not know what to make of her. It appears that she was trying to hide from someone in plain sight, but who could they talk to? This case is a complete riddle.

The other case involves an arson fire that killed Lindsay Mullen, a mother of three, as well as two of her kids. She did not have an enemy in the world, but this crime was calculated and deliberate. There is more to the story here than is told in the very beginning, but the finding out is what makes it interesting.

Part of what makes Stephen Booth's books popular is the contrast between Detective Sergeant Diane Fry, a strong-willed young woman who is not comfortable living in a small town, and Detective Constable Ben Cooper, whose father was a celebrated cop and who does not like to make waves or inconvenience anyone. He does the job he has to do and he will do it properly. He knows the small town and he knows its sensitivity. Fry does not, but her headstrong attitude is what keeps her ahead even if she would rather be elsewhere.

The book's plot is filled with many misdirections before getting to the point of Rose Shepherd's true identity as well as the disturbing motive for Lindsay Mullen’s murder. Still, the characters are what make the story interesting and it does pick up. You just need to be patient, but the payoff is well worth it.
