US Marshall Tim Rackley knows that he is not a paragon of justice due to his past, but he works hard to make up for it. In THE KILL CLAUSE he joined a secret vigilante organization in order to get vengeance for the brutal murder of his daughter. He knows that what he did was wrong and he has more than made up for it. However, this will come into question once he learns why a prison escapee has sprung out of jail with not much of his sentence left to go.

Walker Jameson is a dishonorably discharged US Marine who is serving his time on Terminal Island for a case involving domestic terrorism. In prison he keeps to himself and very few people try to approach him, just letting him be as he completes his sentence.

After someone whispers something in Jameson's ear, he organizes a brazen prison escape in order to fulfill an agenda known only to him – and one that Rackley has to find out before it is too late. Jameson is dangerous and an even match for Rackley. There is bound to be a showdown, but there is more to the story than is first revealed and it is in Jameson’s past. Once Rackley manages to go through all the red tape he realizes that Jameson is fighting for something that is a matter of life-and-death for him. It is here where the shades of gray start to come in. Will Rackley help him or stop him?

Overall, LAST SHOT is a good book, but not Hurwitz's best. For that you will want to read THE PROGRAM. Except for the prison break, the story lacks a bit of originality with situations taken from American television. Still, it is worth the read. Hurwitz knows how to entertain and Rackley is not a stereotypical character. It is a treat to follow his road to redemption.
