Ben Abbott is a real estate agent from Newbury, Connecticut, a town that prides itself in its history and is resistant to change. Abbott is sort of the same way, considering where he’s been. He spares no expense when it comes to giving readers his opinion regarding real estate today.

He hates lavishness and McMansions but he deals with things in his own way. He may not like it, but he manages to live through it. The latest thing to assault his sensibilities is a new mausoleum belonging to real estate magnate Brian Grose that has been completed inside the town’s cemetery. To call it gaudy would be an offense to the word itself. It has already created a lot of stir in town, but there is little anyone can do about it. That is, unless you count a murder.

During the town’s tercentennial celebration inside the cemetery, Grose’s fresh body is found inside the mausoleum. The Newbury Cemetery Association asks Abbott to try to get to the bottom of things and use his amateur detective skills to get to the bottom of things. Charlie Cubrero, an illegal Ecuadorian immigrant, who may or may not be involved with drug trafficking, is blamed for the murder. However, Abbott believes that there is more than meets the eye in a case that is anything but straightforward.

Ben discovers that Grose may have had more than one person who wanted him dead. With the help of two reluctant police officers, a videographer, and a priest, maybe this mystery can be solved, maybe not.

MAUSOLEUM is a nice cozy with a lot of wry humor interspersed throughout. The book is pretty much what it is, and does not provide anything new that we have not seen before. However, it was an enjoyable read and that is what counts with this series.
