Jefferson Bass is the pseudonym for Dr Bill Bass, a forensic anthropologist, and journalist Jon Jefferson. Together they have written books and worked on several documentaries about the University of Tennessee’s Body Farm. It is an outdoor lab and facility where scientists study human decomposition in a controlled setting. Many state medical examiners use their studies when working on murder victims. Author Patricia Cornwell also brought this place to light with her fifth novel, THE BODY FARM.

The team of Jefferson Bass know the Body Farm intimately and they try to bring this facility into the world of fiction with a series featuring forensic anthropologist Bill Brackton and his team who work at the University of Tennessee. THE DEVIL’S BONES is the third book in the series.

The main problem is that the authors should have quit while they were ahead and stuck with the non-fiction aspects of their writings. The book suffers from “too much information”, syndrome giving away major key points from one of the books when one of Brockton’s colleagues was murdered. THE DEVIL’S BONES continues that story and tries to come up with some sort of resolution about those events. His nemesis has escaped from prison wanting vengeance on Brockton and his staff. The novel also explores the business of body cremations within two separate cases that will provide deeper insights to the research work done at the Body Farm.

The book has engaging characters, some funny situations, and could have made for a better read. The book’s spoiler was in its detailed recounting of previous events. It could have been handled differently without having to get too much into specifics. If you need to read THE DEVIL’S BONES, make sure you read FLESH IN BONE first.
