Bantam, New York is a lovely in the fall. The trees start to turn color and most of the residents appear to be happy. But Abby Silvernale is far from happy with the fall changes. She is a waitress at the InnBetween and this is the slow season for them. Abby's hours are shortened and she soon realizes that she has to find a part-time job until things pick up at the restaurant again.

With the help of friends she gets a part-time job as a secretary for 91-year-old, Norman. Norman was a famous sculptor in his younger years but since he has gotten older he is, at best, difficult. His memory is fading and Norman needs Abby's help to organize his life.

Shortly after she meets Norman she runs across Germaine LeClair, who is a stranger in town. Abby meets her when she helps Germaine after a car accident. Germaine soon attaches herself to Abby and seems to be everywhere Abby is, even at Norman's house. Abby sees Germaine and Norman in an argument, and it looks like Norman wants to hit Germaine with his cane. Abby suspects that something is going on between the two and decides to find out exactly what it is.

Making matters a little more complicated is Abby's boss Dulcie who hires a new dishwasher, Fritz. Abby takes an immediate dislike to him. After a while most of the people working at the InnBetween feel the same way Abby does, except for Dulcie who has fallen in love with Fritz. Does Fritz love Dulcie or is he up to no good?

COLD MOON HOME is the second novel by Julia Pomeroy and it is as good as her first. The setting in Bantam, NY is great. The town is filled with colorful characters with interesting lives and the reader gets a marvelous taste of hometown living. Pomeroy has a unique way of describing the town and its residents that make readers want to come back for more.

Abby's friendship with her boss, Dulcie is quite realistic. Dulcie depends on Abby for many things, both personal and business but when Dulcie doesn't get her way, she puts her foot firmly down as Abby's boss.

As a main character, Abby is a gem. She is totally likeable but not a goody two shoes type of person. She's a smart woman who has traveled and has done things other than working as a waitress, but she made the decision to go back and live in Bantam, her hometown. Even though it might appear that Abby is dropping out of life, she isn't. Bantam is where she is happiest.

And I'm happy visiting Bantam as well. The characters and setting are comfortable and the author welcomes all readers into her world. If you're looking for a brilliant new author to read, give any of Julia Pomeroy's books a try.
