Charlie Hodges, the mailman for over 40 years in the small town of Seneca Falls, West Virginia, finds mail left in the box at the Dunning Estate on Monday. Charlie knows that State Senator Stewart Dunning never leaves his mail in the box but always has his housekeeper or secretary pick it up when he is out of town.

There's nothing more that Charlie likes than a good gossip, so later that afternoon, as he is delivering the mail to The Bottoms at the other end of town, he stops for a chat with the Senator's housekeeper who tells him she has been given the week off and been told that the secretary would pick up the mail.

Joshua Chacon aka Joshua Collier, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author who lives in New Mexico, gets a phone call that his senator half-brother has died. Currently, he is researching the possibility of writing a new book on the dumping of nuclear waste. He drops everything and returns to West Virginia to attend the funeral.

Their mother had been killed when Joshua Chacon was a baby and her sister raised him as Joshua Collier. He started his journalistic career under Carl Travis, owner and publisher of the local paper. Chacon stays in Seneca Falls to find out what happened to Stewart, which involves him in a plot by the other rich family in town. Angus Munroe has contracts to dump garbage into the played-out strip mines that dot the county, causing toxins to leach into the water supply.

It is too bad that this was William Buchanan's last book before his death in 2005. It has everything . . . great vibrant characters, living in a real landscape and dealing with life in a small border town, one whose sons died on both sides during the War Between the States. Oh, and if you want to know what the title means, read the book.
