In a construction site in Chasen Heights, on the shore of Lake Michigan, south of Chicago, a backhoe uncovers human bones and some arrowheads. Sam Casey, former homicide detective, half Lakota Sioux, and somewhat psychic, is drawn to the site. When she touches the bones of a dead person, something is transmitted to her, perhaps the last moments of the life of the person. She dreams of a night with two moons.

Meanwhile, Alex Red Cloud, who lives in a cottage on Sam's property, and a busload of Native Americans appear at the site to make an offering to their ancestors . . . and to start action for repatriation of the bones and artifacts.

An archeological team is brought in to assess the site, and Sam's husband, Jake Mitchell, still a homicide detective, and his partner, Frank Travis are assigned to the case when it is discovered that at least one of the bodies is not an ancient burial. In the initial confusion, many of the artifacts, which do seem to be authentic and old, disappear, so Frank and Jake also have to search for those.

It doesn't help that Alex Red Cloud is in jail, refusing to talk English, nor does it help that Abby, Sam's mother, who lives with them, is dealing with her infant grandson to allow Sam some freedom to investigate.

Sam keeps trying to decipher the images she sees when she touches the bones of the four individuals who have been unearthed from the site. It appears that at least three of them were killed with arrows, so they could very well be native burials.

And are the archeologists trying to help or hinder the discoveries while the owner of the construction site continuously tries to get the excavation closed down so he can build his shopping center.

ECHOES FROM THE GRAVE is the fourth book in the Sam Casey series. Tooley has created slightly off-beat characters and strange situations in the mundane region of southern Chicago. It's worth seeking her books out.
