PERFECT DARK: SECOND FRONT is the second of a proposed three-part series that continues the story arc inside the popular XBox 360 science fiction game known as PERFECT DARK ZERO. The game is a first-person shooter where players get to be Joanna Dark, a former bounty hunter involved in a brutal war against the hyper-corporations, who are the actual powers centers when it comes to world domination.

Every major deal is done inside their world, where the term hostile takeover has a whole new meaning. Each of these corporations has its own army and a stake in specific markets constantly at war with each other. It is a violent game of one-upmanship and Joanna is a reluctant participant. She is good at what she does and has skills no ordinary person has. She only has one main objective in mind, the complete destruction of dataDyne Industries. She blames them for her father's death and she wants vengeance.

In SECOND FRONT, someone is trying to flush Joanna out in order to get some revenge. This killer is impersonating Joanna and killing off some major CEOs working on a corporate merger. Joanna is still recuperating from her last mission and she knows she cannot remain still while someone is out there targeting her. She knows that she needs to be proactive and there are very few people she can trust. She needs to bring the battle to her impersonator.

Joanna is an action hero who reacts first instead of putting thought into action. She is young and impulsive, but she knows what she is doing. Greg Rucka, known for his Atticus Kodiak novels, is a comic book writer who knows how to put action into the written page without having to break a sweat or spend a fortune on special effects. He knows how to activate one's imagination and he does a good job with this novel.

One of the drawbacks about this book is that it helps if you read PERFECT DARK: INITIAL VECTOR as there are some plot points involving dataDyne which is made much clearer than in this book. If you are looking for a quick and light action book, there is no need to search further. The PERFECT DARK series works well as brain candy. Short, but satisfying.
