Do not be mistaken into thinking that KILL ME is a Dr Alan Gregory book. It is not. He does, however, have a part to play in this book but it's not big enough for KILL ME to be considered part of the series.

In KILL ME Stephen White looks at that tricky question of what one does when your quality of life degenerates to such an extent that you begin to consider seriously calling it a day. The narrator of KILL ME is a happily married man (we are not told his name until much later on in the novel) with a young daughter but with a fondness for high-risk sports. When a number of grim incidents happen, including his own near escape from death, the narrator begins to consider arranging for his life to be terminated once it reaches a certain stage.

The group Death Angel Inc will do the job for you. However, matters don’t turn out the way the narrator expects them to. He finds himself with a son that he never knew existed, a family on the way and a life-threatening medical condition. This not only gives him cause for concern but also makes him realise that he wants to live a little longer than agreed with the Death Angels and that he will need to try to renegotiate or have the contract rescinded. However, the Death Angels don’t rescind their contracts once they have been made. Is he able to outwit the Death Angels or will they manage to complete their contract?

There are wheels within wheels in this story and what starts out for me to be an interesting morality tale soon descends into an action adventure piece as the narrator tries to outwit the Death Angels so that they cannot fulfil the contract. It is not as if this is not an interesting story, it is. It does in fact raise a rather interesting moral dilemma. The problem that I had with KILL ME was the ending. It was over the top and implausible and spoilt what could have been a rather enjoyable story.
