Crime writer and novelist Andrew Danner has been found not guilty of murder due to a mental defect and he is out as a free man. As he heads home he carries a jar with a brain tumor that was removed from his head days after he was found unconscious atop his ex-fiancée’s butchered body.

Danner does not remember what happened that night and he is not convinced that he killed Genevieve Bertrand, and yet he is scared. What if he actually committed that murder? Could he live with that guilt?

Gregg Hurwitz takes a unique approach with his latest work in what could probably be called contemporary noir. He lets Danner tell the story. Danner admits that he is an unreliable narrator because he claims not to remember what happened that fateful night four months ago. So the crime writer uses his skills as a writer and tries to put himself into a story of what could have happened.

The evidence against him was overwhelming but yet he is not convinced he actually did it. Many people, including most of the general public are convinced of Danner’s guilt. They think he is just trying to stay in the limelight in order to remain famous. Some people are not sure and they think that Danner may have been a patsy for someone’s devious plan. However readers will have to decide for themselves as the story goes along since Danner is the one telling the story and he might not be providing all the necessary details.

All in all, Hurwitz’s experiment employing an unreliable narrator works for this book. The story is well-paced, suspenseful, and with nice touches of average Joe humor. Unfortunately it appears that Hurwitz had no idea how to end the story and came up with his own resolution that most readers might find a little weak. The book started out great, but in the end it just fizzled. Still, THE CRIME WRITER was an unexpected pleasure to read. It was something different, and it was generally something good.

Note: This book is published in the United Kingdom under the title I SEE YOU.
