The reader once again meets up with Trish Maguire in this eighth outing for the London-based attorney. Trish has forsaken family law, which had become much too depressing for her and instead is enjoying more than a little success in the world of corporate law.

Her latest client is a large insurance company that insures a stunning new skyscraper in London. Unfortunately, the brand-new building is developing cracks and the owners, the insurance company and various other interested parties are pointing fingers and scrambling to cover their behinds. Trish is used to this game and is quite good at it.

However, when her very first client from the days of family law walks into her office she at first does not recognize him as a former client. Instead she knows him as a successful sculptor whose work she likes enough to have bought an early piece. He wants to hire her to delve into an aspect of his past (he was a foundling) that has arisen.

Trish is also pleased to learn that she is working with his wife, whom she also admires. Cecelia works for the insurance company and is pregnant with the couple’s first child. When Cecelia is found murdered, the police naturally suspect the husband; however, Trish is his alibi. He was in her office when Cecelia was killed.

Trish has matured and grown much from the early novels. Together with her partner, George, they are raising her teenage brother. We met David in an earlier book when he showed up on Trish’s doorstep after his mother’s murder. They have the same father, a man who is a constant source of aggravation for Trish.

Trish is a warm and intelligent woman who loves her life, her friends, her family and her city. Through her eyes we see much of London, and the city itself is an integral part of each book. The other characters as well are all first-rate and, for the most part, highly likeable. There may be one or two who, on occasion, are less than delightful, just as in real life. This does not diminish the pleasure with which fans great a new book in the series.

The author was born in London and her obvious love of her city comes through in these novels. Cooper formerly wrote the light-hearted Willow King books and slowly moved to a grittier format and thus, Trish Maguire found her way onto the written page.
