Michael Cochrane, a microbiologist, believes he has discovered something that will make him a very rich man. Before he has the chance to explain his discovery to his brother Paul, Michael is murdered. Paul is not sure that Michael discovered anything as Michael has a history of being a prankster and troublemaker. But after meeting industrial spy Elena Sandoval, he learns that Michael's discovery really was important.

It seems that Michael discovered a way to make an alternative to gasoline that is both environmentally friendly and realistic. Gasoline supplies are running out and gasoline prices are over $7.00 a gallon, so this discovery could change the world in a dramatic way. Big business wants this discovery, the Middle East wants this discovery and the oil industry wants this discovery.

Paul must stay on his guard, as some of the people after Michael's notes have no qualms about killing those in the way. As things turn deadly, Paul is forced to decide where his priorities lie and who he can trust. These decisions will determine whether or not Michael's formulae will be released and if Paul will live through this book.

Ben Bova is a well-known and highly respected science fiction novelist. In THE GREEN TRAP, he makes a break from his past works to move into the thriller genre. While this book does take place in the not so distant future and does involve plausible science – it could be termed science fiction – this book is more of a mystery thriller than a techno thriller.

Like Bova's other books, THE GREEN TRAP is well-written with distinctive characters. All of the characters, regardless of their role in the story, have both a voice and a presence in the story. Even the stereotypical characters have an important role in the plot. Paul's personality is strongly developed and the motivation behind his actions is understandable. While Elena is well defined as a character, she is still something of a stereotype as the femme fatale. And of course all of the villains are truly villainous and despicable.

I like Ben Bova's other books and THE GREEN TRAP is in a similar vein. It has several twists and turns that should keep any thriller fan happy. THE GREEN TRAP is not my favorite Bova book as I am not a fan of thrillers. I prefer to read books that feature criminal investigations rather than books that feature high-speed chases. With this caveat, I will admit that I am glad that I read this book. The ending of this book was powerful in that it provides both optimism and pessimism regarding the future of human life.
