Following on from his release after fabricated charges former Miami Dolphins linebacker Zachary Chasteen has been released from the Federal Prison Camp at Bayport into the waiting company of his patient, wealthy British girlfriend and magazine publisher Barbara Pickering.

Zack is persuaded by Barbara to travel to Bermuda and deliver a Madagascan palm tree as a birthday present to Aunt Trula Ambrister (her favourite aunt). Accompanying the duo on the trip is Zack’s friend 'Boggy' Baughtanaxata, a Dominican Republic expatriate. What should have been a relaxing trip without any problems turns into danger when Zack and Boggy once again find themselves caught up in a series of murders beyond their control.

Soon the two friends also become involved with the legendary Bermudan treasure salvager Sir Teddy Schwartz who is coincidentally a friend of Trula Ambrister.

Even though Schwartz is assisting them in their pursuit to find out what happened, his actions give Zack cause for concern when he learns that the victim was in fact trying to recover a two millennium old Christian artifact that had been lost in a shipwreck that took place in the 15th century off Bermuda. What is his motive? Could he in fact be the killer?

This is an entertaining tale featuring a rather rakish, sceptical, yet moralistic anti-hero who is rather appealing in his own way. His two partners in crime – his girlfriend Barbara and Boggy – are the voices of reason in the relationship, Barbara with her tolerance and Boggy with his idiosyncratic but often on the mark pearls of wisdom.

BERMUDA SCHWARTZ is nothing out of the ordinary when it comes to comic crime novels but it is certainly a witty story. The short choppy chapters make for easy reading; it is fun, enjoyable, and quirky.

Zack is one of those characters that you will either love or hate, Barbara is too tolerant for her own good, and Boggy is someone that makes your head spin! This series is very evocative of some of Carl Hiaasen’s work. There is zaniness about the protagonist that desires you to find out what is going to happen. As to the ending of BERMUDA SCHWARTZ, there is a twist that is sure to delight fans of the series.
