Lieutenant Eve Dallas is a no-nonsense kind of a cop living in New York City in the year 2060. She is an advocate for the victims of the crimes she investigates and leaves no stone unturned when it comes to searching for clues. Eve is a master interrogator and always manages to close all of her cases. She has faced all kinds of monsters from serial killers to terrorist organizations, has come face-to-face with death several times and she has never blinked.

Eve is the best at what she does, but when it comes to pregnant women and babies, she is completely clueless. She faces the toughest assignment of her life when she investigates the murder of a young accountant and her fiancée, both employees at a prestigious accounting firm.

But that's not it. Eve knows how to find justice for her victims. She always does in each book. No, what is coming is something that she really dreads and she can no longer postpone it. She will be hosting a baby shower for her best friend, Mavis. All she can think is, "why me?" or "someone zap me now!"

BORN IN DEATH is the latest entry in the ever-popular mystery/romance/sci-fi/police procedural created by Nora Roberts using the pseudonym of JD Robb. One thing that you can be assured of in almost any book of the '. . . in Death' series is a good time. This series is filled with a lot of action, suspense, romance, likeable characters, and moments of humor.

This work is probably one of the funniest in the entire series. Eve's maternal feelings have never really been developed so she cannot understand why women are joyful when they get morning sickness; cannot get why babies need to wear baby shoes when they have not learned how to walk yet; and the idea of going to Lamaze class is icky for her. During her entire career as a member of the New York Police and Security Department, she has yet to deliver a baby and she plans to keep it that way. It would not be a spoiler to say that her streak is about to come to an end.

What enhances this book even more is the superb dramatization by Susan Ericksen in the unabridged recording of this book. She has been narrating the Eve Dallas books for several years and she has gotten her stride. She manages to be Eve in all that matters. She's tough, when Eve needs to be tough. However, when it comes to Eve's "aw, geez" moments – priceless! You'll laughing so hard you will have to pull your car over lest you be in an accident. Reading the series is a treat, listening to it even better.
