Cora Feldon is known as the Puzzle Lady since her face and name are plastered alongside word puzzles in the newspaper and on TV ads for a children's cereal. In truth, her niece Shirley is really the puzzle maven, so when a housewife asks Cora to create a puzzle that will help her get out of hot water with her husband, Cora asks Shirley to do the favor. But Shirley is all agog; she's just accepted a marriage proposal! Because the puzzle was free and no one else will ever see it, Shirley uses an old puzzle, changes some words and Cora delivers the puzzle to the grateful housewife.

When her husband reacts so well to the puzzle, the housewife sends her story into the local paper as an example of how nice people can be. Unfortunately, the puzzle is published with the story and its real creator, Benny Southstreet, a low-level crook sees dollar signs in his head and he decides to sue the Puzzle Lady for plagiarism.

Meanwhile Cora is bored! There's been no excitement in her life lately: she's stopped drinking and overeating, hasn't seen an interesting man anywhere lately, and has only her smoking as her last bad habit. She visits her pal at the local police station and begs a case from him, which turns out to be the theft of some old chairs. Not one to turn away from a mystery, Cora throws her all into looking for the missing items.

Later, when Cora is told that she is being sued for plagiarism she can't believe it. That's what happens when you do favors for people! And then there is a series of break-is in the neighborhood. When Benny is found dead, next to a gun with Cora's fingerprints on it, Cora sees that there's more going on here than meets the eye. Who would set her up for a murder? And why?

YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO REMAIN PUZZLED is a fast-paced fun book with witty and snappy dialogue. The characters are amusing and the mystery is very well put together. The readers are as amazed as Cora that all the evidence seems to point to her, even though we all know that she is innocent.

You don't need to be a crossword puzzle fan to enjoy this book, although there are puzzles included in the story that the readers can do. The story and the characters will hold you and keep you reading until the very last page. The solution to the mystery came as a complete surprise to me. YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO REMAIN PUZZLED is a must read!
