Harry Dresden is a wizard who lives in Chicago. In fact, he is the only wizard listed in the Chicago yellow pages. In this, the eighth book in the series, he has reluctantly become a Warden of the White Council, the group that regulates wizard behavior.

There is an ongoing war between the vampire Red Court and the wizard White Council. All requests for assistance from the Queens of the Faeries, to both the Summer and Winter courts, have not been answered. So far, 200 wizards and 4500 civilians have been killed by the vampires. Harry is told to go to the faerie courts and find out what is happening.

Ebanezer, an older high-ranking wizard, is Harry's mentor. He took Harry under his protection when Harry was just a young, untrained wizard and taught Harry how to behave and use his skills for good. Ebanezer suspects that there is a traitor on the White Council and cautions Harry to be careful and help him find the saboteur, while the head Wizard of the council informs Harry that his assignment is to find the black magic practitioner who is currently at large in Chicago.

The Harry Dresden books constitute a continuum. One can read any one of them, but it would be better to read them all in order before the television series starts next year. THE DRESDEN FILES will star Paul Blackthorne, a British actor well known to US and UK TV fans (Deadwood, Medium, 24, ER, Holby City, Jonathan Creek and Peak Practice). Valerie Cruz, also well known to US TV viewers, will be Lt Karrin Murphy.

The series starts slowly. In STORM FRONT, Harry helps police solve a case involving a supernatural being. FOOL MOON (number two) involves him with werewolves, while the third book, GRAVE PERIL has ghosts antagonizing the wizard. In SUMMER KNIGHT we meet the world of Faerie and then in number five, DEATH MASKS, the Vatican hires Harry to find the stolen Shroud of Turin. BLOOD RITES has a war between vampires and wizards, with a surprise twist when Thomas, a vampire, asks Harry for help, and in DEAD BEAT, Harry has to find a book for Mavra, a vampire of the Black Court.

Each book has a different antagonist for Harry. In each book, he calls on his friends for help -- sometimes. He does try to shield those he cares about from danger but is not always successful. In short, if you like a bit of the supernatural, along with well delineated characters, and good stories, try this series.
