Riley Crane is an FBI agent working in the Special Crimes Unit with a focus on the occult. She has a military background and also has paranormal abilities. This combination of skills makes her a woman able to take care of herself. All cases dealing with the occult tend to be sent to her, including unofficial ones such as the one that brings her to Opal Island.

Almost three weeks after arriving on Opal Island, Riley wakes up with no memory of her time here. While she does have her long-term memory, the last three weeks are a mystery. In addition, her paranormal abilities seem to be gone. Riley refuses to admit to anyone that she does not know who they are or know why she is there.

Later that day, she is taken to a murder scene. There she views a body that has been decapitated and ritually tortured. The scene appears to be that of a satanic ritual taken too far. Riley has suspicions about the crime scene but is unable to say why. Something about this murder bothers her but her memory loss is standing in the way.

Then she begins losing time. She will 'wake up' without being able to remember what happened to her. These periods of time stretch anywhere from 12 to 18 hours. Even though Riley has no memory of what she did, no one else around her is aware that anything is wrong. This is a sign that whatever happened to her paranormal talents is still affecting her. Riley must find the murderer in order to reverse her power loss before she ends up dead.

SLEEPING WITH FEAR combines the genres of romantic suspense, paranormal tales and adventure thrillers. Riley Crane is the embodiment of the heroine from each genre. She is involved in a relationship with a man she cannot remember, she has clairvoyant abilities and she is very capable of taking care of herself.

While the plotting of SLEEPING WITH FEAR could be much tighter, the story does move in a coherent manner. At times, Riley's memory lapses are just as frustrating to the reader as they are to Riley because these lost periods cause breaks in the narrative flow. Luckily most of the missing pieces are revealed by the end of the book.

Excluding some of the plotting faults, SLEEPING WITH FEAR, will make an ideal vacation book.
