West Wheeling, Illinois, is probably not even a little gray dot on a map, but that doesn't mean nothing goes on there. True, everyone seems to be related in one way or another to just about everyone else; some family trees just don't fork much. But it's home to acting Sheriff Ajax 'Homer' Deters, and he wants to keep the trouble to a minimum.

That's going to be difficult. There's a detective in town looking for the missing Roger Devon, a teacher at the local religious community. Ash Jackson is missing, which is no big loss, but there seems to be some connection between Ash and Roger.

That connection just might be Angie Boone, who's 16 and turning into quite the looker. There's an ATF man in town, looking for Ash. There are several bodies, all of them difficult to identify. Then there's the 23-car pile-up in the middle of town, resulting in the release of 500 chickens. And there's a very tame white tiger. It's just another day in Mayberry.

Michael Allen Dymmoch writes the Caleb/Thinnes series and is the author of several other stand-alone books. DEATH IN WEST WHEELING has Dymmoch once again writing something completely different, something one wouldn't expect. There are some common elements in all the books. The plots work, the characters are well developed, the writing quality is excellent.

DEATH IN WEST WHEELING has one element some readers may find off-putting: it's written in a non-traditional English, not quite dialect but close. That's the way people speak in some parts of the country, and it is part of who Homer is. Dymmoch is an author willing to take a chance with something new; we readers should be willing to do the same.
