There is a reason that most self-published authors can't find an established publisher to print and distribute their books. But there are always exceptions to any rule. Australian thriller writer, Matthew Reilly comes to mind, and now Sue Ann Jaffarian with TOO BIG TO MISS.

Jaffarian self-published this novel several years ago, as well as her second book of the series THE CURSE OF THE HOLY PAIL (reviewed on this site). Finally, a publisher, Midnight Ink, an imprint of Llewellyn Publishing Company of St. Paul, recognized that there might be a market for the Odelia Grey series.

Odelia is a 40-something, short, fat, single paralegal with a great sense of humor, and many good friends. One of them, Sophie London, has apparently committed suicide. Unknown to Odelia and their friend Zenobia Washington, Sophie had a webcam in her home which broadcast all her doings, 24 hours a day.

Sophie had been an advocate for plus-sized women. She was proud of her size and tried to help other large women get over their insecurities. No way would she consider committing suicide -- yet she undoubtedly put a pistol in her mouth and pulled the trigger. It was seen on television.

Some of the stored images on the webcam make Odelia wonder about Sophie, but she was her friend and Odelia is certain that there is someone else in the frame. As she searches, she learns more about her friend, and realizes that someone has to step into Sophie's shoes as protector of large women.

Finally we have a protagonist that doesn't look like a survivor of Auschwitz, one who is old enough to talk back to her boss when he tries to take advantage of her legal acumen, and who could be a spokesperson for the ageing baby boomers.

I am glad to say that a revised edition of THE CURSE OF THE HOLY PAIL will be released on February 1 2007 and a third Odelia Grey book should appear either late in 2007 or early 2008. Jaffarian's books have slightly off-beat themes and an unusual protagonist -- an intelligent, plus-sized, not young woman. There aren't too many of those around.
