This tiny little novel packs a huge punch. Sara Gran is one of the most satisfying writers of my generation, able to turn the reader's head and confuse the issue at the same time. Everything you think you know is false in Gran's world.

Amanda is a young married woman with a bright future as an architect. She and her husband are solid, down-to-earth people who love each other immensely. Then the tapping starts. Their apartment seems to have some sort of presence, an entity that appears to Amanda in her deepest dreams. The woman is familiar to Amanda, but she can't place her until it is too late.

Amanda does everything she can to fight for her freedom, but the power of this particular evil is insidious, too strong to be denied.

There have been many stories of possession, of spirits and goblins, of things that go bump in the night. Gran takes all of these and rolls them up into a chilling tableau -- the reader is captivated as Amanda's personality begins to change. It is a slow turn, marked by one or two seemingly innocent moments. Suddenly, Amanda is fighting her own personal demon, the evil seductress who leads her astray over the course of the novel.

Gran's ability to weave a simple tale is heightened in this novel. The reader is taken on a frightening journey, one where the lights are best kept on and the door and windows checked and locked. It's just plain spooky -- not in a ghost might jump out at any time sort of way, more of a yearning, pervasive creepiness that almost sneaks up on you.

I look forward to reading more of Gran's work. She is truly becoming the voice of a generation.
