COUNTDOWN is the latest book to feature Jane MacGuire, the adopted daughter of forensic sculptor Eve Duncan and her husband Atlanta PD Joe Quinn. Jane is almost kidnapped, her friend murdered and the roommate that betrayed her is found dead after an extremely suspicious hit and run.

Before long, Jane once again finds herself involved with Mark Trevor, a smuggler and conman who she hasn't seen for over four years and who has his own reasons for wanting to keep her safe. It appears that someone is trying to destroy her life before she has even had a chance to enjoy it and the past is returning with a vengeance that shows no compassion.

Jane's remarkable resemblance to the mysterious woman of ancient Herculaneum Cira is what brings her into the line of fire. She soon fines herself once more plunged into a high rolling adventure involving both Trevor, Cira and a megalomaniac who wishes to find the answer to the mystery of the hiding place of Cira's gold.

COUNTDOWN is a suspense thriller where the starting point is based on obsession, and the fixation of a number of powerful men on antiquities and gold. It is also a riveting read and certainly a page-turner with a number of unexpected villains also emerging to keep the pace ticking over nicely. The reader will also find both psychological and physical torture present, which might give them a slight twinge but certainly do nothing to impair the action.

Johansen has not completely let go of all her romantic links and there is still a fair amount of passion reverberating in this book especially between Jane and Trevor. What does emerge is that as a suspense author Johansen has written a novel, which I am sure that many of her romance readers will also enjoy. She has also quite cannily embedded in COUNTDOWN enough allusions and suggestions to make the reader believe that there will most certainly be at least one more adventure.
