SHOCK WAVE was my introduction to writer James O Born and his main character, FDLE (Florida Department of Law Enforcement) agent Bill Tasker. The story twists and turns through Miami's streets, examining the lives of four law enforcement officers from different agencies while spinning a strong tale of crime with a criminal worthy of Tasker's attention.

Bill Tasker is coming off a divorce and a run-in with the FBI, and is still smarting from both. He is a quiet, unassuming kind of guy, until he gets riled, and then, watch out. He's lost the faith of the FBI (through no fault of his own) and his actions in the beginning of the book sequester him from another great source, the ATF.

Tasker seems to work better off the reservation, digging up the truth while the acronym agencies play politics. When a Stinger missile comes into play, Tasker and the ATF must stop its sale. In so doing, they trip over a much bigger crime in process, a would-be bomber with a mission.

Tasker brings the escapade to the various agencies attention, to no avail. While the FBI and ATF are willing to put their heads in the sand, Tasker's sense of justice drives him to find out the truth. Working with Miami cop Derrick Sutter, Tasker never lets up, even when his life is on the line. His dedication to finding the bomber brings beguiling ATF agent Camy Parks into the hunt, as well as misguided FBI agent Jimmy Lail, a white boy who thinks he's a rapper. The oddness of the characters make this story come alive.

The book has a no holds barred feeling to it, like Born would let Tasker topple over the edge if it meant getting the job done. I found myself worrying about the character, which is a hallmark of success in my book. I immediately bought Born's earlier books, and I look forward to witnessing Tasker's life journey. He's a great character with a lot of potential.
