THE KING OF LIES is the story of Jackson Workman ('Work') Pickens, a lawyer, whose attorney father had become rich and famous after receiving a million dollar jury award for one of his clients. As the story opens the reader learns that Work's father's body has been found. He was killed almost two years before and left in the closet of a store in an abandoned mall which is being torn down.

An over-zealous female detective desperately wants to prove that Work committed the murder. He, on the other hand, is trying desperately to protect his sister who he feels probably committed the murder. As the facts are deftly revealed, the reader is taken behind the scenes in the jail, state hospital, and morgue. The reader will learn a lot about the preparation and defense of a murder case. The emotional trauma of rape; lust for money, power, and revenge; manipulation of individuals; and realization of years lost move the reader from event to event with heartrending sympathy.

Author John Hart is himself an attorney and THE KING OF LIES is his first novel. This is a superb beginning. The story is unusual in that the main character is an attorney and doesn't really want to be one. In fact he hates it. Hart writes about the difficult emotions and issues that lawyers are confronted with in representing their clients. This is aptly shown when describing the role reversal after Work Pickens is accused of murdering his father.

Hart examines human feelings and frailties with compassion. His writing is fresh and never trite and his descriptions are most unusual and vivid. I thoroughly enjoyed THE KING OF LIES and look very forward to future novels by Hart. He kept me turning the pages almost as fast as I could. Every page held my interest in an uncommonly brilliant way.
