Tom Redmond gets the chance to interview Oz Bird, who is both a famous criminal and a sharpshooter. Bird is returning to the area in order to reclaim his wife who divorced him while he was in prison. This is a dangerous man, yet Redmond feels honored to be selected for the interview.

Shortly after the interview is published, Colonel Studely brings his Wild West Show to San Francisco. One of the members of the show is Dora Pratt, a female sharpshooter. Dora used to be married to Bird and learned all about shooting from him. Then, Studely is found dead. The most likely murderer is Bird as Studely once had a relationship with Dora.

Ambrose Bierce begins investigating this murder with Redmond's assistance. Redmond finds himself getting closer to Dora, which is very dangerous as her ex-husband is a jealous killer. Somehow Ambrose Bierce must keep both Tom Redmond and Dora Pratt out of trouble as well as stop a killer.

To a modern reader, Ambrose Bierce might not be well known, but he was a popular person in his day -- a 19th century journalist. THE DEVIL'S DICTIONARY is an entertaining satire of society and government. Each chapter of AMBROSE BIERCE AND THE ACE OF SHOOTS begins with a definition from this satirical work.

Unlike some of the other books that appear in this series, AMBROSE BIERCE AND THE ACE OF SHOOTS features Tom Redmond in a leading role. He is the person to interview Oz Bird, he is the person threatened and stalked by Bird and he is the person to become involved with Bird's ex-wife. While Ambrose is the person that ultimately solves the mystery, Redmond is the person involved in all of the footwork and action. This working relationship is similar to several other famous mystery duos. As others have shown, if a formula works, stick with it.
