Penn Cage has moved with his young daughter back to his childhood hometown of Natchez, Mississippi to live a more quiet life. He was a high-powered lawyer for years until the death of his wife made him rethink things and become a popular writer. But the small town is shaken when the raped and strangled body of one of their high school students, a girl whose future successes seemed to be a certainty, is found by the local creek.

Penn's oldest friend, the town's well-respected doctor Andrew Elliott, confesses to Penn that he has been hiding a deep secret. He has been having an affair with the underage girl. Penn is appalled, but when the police uncover the secret relationship and the doctor becomes the prime suspect and the town turns against him, Penn agrees to become his lawyer. He is also determined to find the real killer.

Penn is soon to discover that the case is going to be used as a political stepping-stone for the DA and his staff. He also finds out more about the secret life that the victim of the crime led by reading her diary. Penn's eyes are opened to pressures on modern teenagers and what is considered right and wrong in how they deal with sex, drugs and getting ahead. Soon his sensibilities are stretched almost to breaking. The truth behind the racial, political and economic unrest of his hometown breaks his heart but brings up a determination in him to change things.

As more people are killed, he finds himself in the middle of the raging storm that surrounds the case and his life is soon in dire jeopardy.

TURNING ANGEL is a first-rate mystery, solidly built, well-written, very well-paced and filled with turns and twists that amazes the readers. The characters, all of them, are masterfully crafted and all ring true. By the time you finish this book you feel as if you have traveled a long journey through an emotional minefield, but a lot has been learned about the world's seamier side. TURNING ANGEL is great reading.
