Portland police detective Sgt Catherine Hobbes is on the case of a serial murderer. There's evidence that a woman is involved, but Hobbes's bosses can't believe the killer can be a woman, but Hobbes has her own idea.

When a relative of one of the early victims hires Joe Pitt, a well-known and respected ex-cop, now a PI, he is permitted to investigate with Hobbes and their relationship isn't an easy one. Hobbes doesn't like much about Pitt, and he is only interested in doing the job well.

Meanwhile, the killer is roaming around using the name of Tanya Starling. She changes her identities as she tries to find a place, and a man, to make her happy. But she's inclined to see all her hook-ups as short-lived ones and uses whatever's handy to cut the ties, usually by killing the latest man with it.

As the killer goes from town to town, trying to blend in until the lure of nightlife urges her to act rashly, Hobbes is on the job, trying to outwit and get one step ahead of the killer. By doing so she comes to Tanya's attention, making Hobbes her number one enemy. And Tanya always gets even with enemies.

NIGHTLIFE is a fascinating book; the murders surprise you and the mystery unravels in a well-written way. There's not much on what might have really created a serial murderer in Tanya. What we see of her background is hard, but not unusual and by having Tanya think that she's simply looking out for her happiness, author Thomas Perry has made Tanya's acts of homicide very different from the usual serial murder mysteries around lately. I really enjoyed the lack of turgid, sick, psychological perversions that seem to make up most of the other recent books.

NIGHTLIFE is a solid, well-paced and completely enjoyable book. I liked that the author followed both the killer and the good cop who is doing her best to find and stop her. There were no false notes in any of the characters and I found that I hated putting this book down for any reason.

NIGHTLIFE by Thomas Perry is first rate and I intend to find the rest of his books that use these characters. If they are anything like NIGHTLIFE, they are going to be a fine reads!
