Rowan Smith is a former FBI Agent, now a best-selling mystery author. She suddenly quit the Bureau after seeing a crime scene that hit too close to home. Rowan and her brother were the only survivors of a family killing. She could no longer bear the crime scenes yet her books are dark, gritty novels and they all feature serial killers.

After a killer commits a crime exactly replicating a murder in her first book, she and her FBI contacts are sure someone is out to get Rowan. Reluctantly she accepts a bodyguard. Michael Flynn is an ex-cop who now runs a private investigator agency along with his brother and sister. Michael is attracted to Rowan but when she meets John, the older brother, sparks fly.

John is very professional and does not want to get involved with a client and Rowan is sad and lonely despite her toughness. Neither of them is looking for romance. Have they found it -- well, yes they have. Will they survive to build a life together? That hangs in the balance as they search out a clever and remorseless killer whose identity is a mystery.

THE PREY is classified as romantic suspense; and there is plenty of both. The author knows how to kick the suspense quotient up another notch and she also knows how to write love scenes. This is definitely an edge-of-the-seat book, with nail-biting suspense. I figured out who the killer had to be, but that did not ruin the book as I had to wait for Rowan and the FBI to figure it out.

The author quit her job in local government just four years ago to devote her time to her family and her writing. In less than three years she sold a trilogy of romantic suspense novels to Ballantine Books. THE PREY is the first, to be followed by THE HUNT and THE KILL.
