Washington DC wedding planner extraordinaire Annabelle Archer is frantically waiting for her latest bride and groom to enter the Fairmont Hotel where their wedding reception is about to start. Things are not going well at all, what with the huge argument she just had with Chef Henri. He got so angry with her that he kicked her out of his kitchen. Within minutes of the fight, she finds the chef impaled on the claws of the tiger ice sculpture.

Of course at first the police suspect that Annabelle killed Henri, especially after the chef's staff tells them about the argument. And then, when one of the kitchen staff saw Annabelle standing over the dead body, that almost clinched it.

Eventually, the police realize that Annabelle wasn't the murderer and arrest Georgia Rhodes, the catering executive of the Fairmont Hotel. It was a known fact that Georgia hated Chef Henri and that they had an argument right before he was murdered. Georgia swears that she didn't kill the chef but the evidence is mounting up and the police don't believe her.

Georgia asks Annabelle to help clear her name and since Chef Henri wasn't a very nice person and hated by many people, Annabelle is sure that someone else killed him. In fact, she overheard another cook talking about how Chef Henri had gotten him fired and blacklisted. Now Annabelle is off to find out who really killed the chef and nothing is going to stop her.

FOR BETTER OR HEARSE is author Laura Durham's second installment in the Annabelle Archer mystery series and it's a lot of fun. Since Durham is a wedding planner herself she knows quite a bit about the business, and that expertise adds a lot of authentic details to her stories.

Her characters are easy to like, the reading is fast and funny and Annabelle and her friends make a great sleuthing team. If you you're in the market for a fun cozy to read, definitely take a look at the Annabelle Archer books.
