In order to put the evil vampire Piscary behind bars in Cincinnati, bounty hunter witch Rachel Morgan makes a deal with a demon, Algaliarept. If Al will testify against Piscary, Rachel will become his familiar. He does and now she must join her aura to his.

She goes into the churchyard adjoining the old church she shares with her partner, Ivy, a vampire, and calls the demon. She fulfils her part of the bargain, but manages to keep her soul so she does not have to go to the otherworld with him. Ceri, an elf, and Al's former familiar, is pleased to have been released from slavery.

Meanwhile, Rachel's boyfriend Nick hasn't been around in a while. He can't reconcile the fact that Rachel accidentally made him her familiar, so he is staying away. Ivy's friend, sexy vampire Kisten, a former employe of Piscary, is looking better and better to Rachel.

And then there is the third partner in the business of putting rogue creatures of the otherworld out of business. He is Jenks, a pixie. Pixies can't take cold weather, so he and his family (wife and about 25 children) are living in Rachel's roll-top desk for the winter.

Somehow I missed the first two books in this series. The third one definitely stands alone. It seems normal to have all kinds of different creatures living and working in Cincinnati. Rachel is no weak female, nor is Ivy. They both have supernatural powers, as do many of the other characters in this book, but all seems natural.

At the end of the book, when one has to come back to this world, it takes a moment or two before one realizes that there are no witches, vampires, pixies,or elves hanging around. And that is a pity because Rachel's world seems richer than ours.
