In the Soho of 1956, Lizzie is living what her mother would consider a sinful life. Lizzie works for two homosexuals who run a costumer and dress emporium. Her boss, Freddy the Frock and his partner are among her best friends, as is Sugar Plum Flaherty who runs a club with his ill-tempered business partner, Bandy.

Bandy comes from a wealthy family, who have mostly disowned her. She spent part of her youth in Hong Kong and her youngest sister had a child out of wedlock to a Chinese man. Of course in those days it was a terrible scandal. Now the child, an 18-year-old named Peace, is in England attending boarding school.

Peace has run away from school -- she hates it and is a victim of constant bullying. Sugar and Lizzie convince Bundy to let Peace attend a local school and live with Lizzie. Liz loves having the girl there, as she is still heartbroken over the death of her young daughter several years ago.

Peace has fallen in love and runs away with her young man when she is kidnapped by one of the Chinese gangs and is to be shipped back to Hong Kong, But her friends in Soho, Lizzie, Sugar and the rest join together with her boyfriend and by their resourcefulness rescue her just in time.

Pip Granger has written three other books in this series. The first two books were from the viewpoint of young Rosie, who lives with her foster parents over their cafe. The third book was from the viewpoint of Madame Zelda, another regular; and this one is from Lizzie's point of view.

These books are wonderfully written, they are not violent, but are not cozy either. The characters are beautiful down-to-earth people, the kind who are the salt of the earth and will go to any length to help a friend or a neighbor. The author herself lived in Soho in the 50s.
