After being off for a year due to a stomach wound received in the line of duty Detective Sergeant Logan MacRae's first day back on the job isn't an easy one. Other Detective Sergeants are unavailable so he's ordered to lead a high-profile investigation right away.

On a freezing cold rainy night, the first of many in Aberdeen, the body of a decomposing child has been found, mutilated, strangled and left in a ditch. Still trying to get his bearings, MacRae is disgusted to learn that a reporter has somehow found out everything about the case and has gone public with it.

Another child's body is found and the police have a tentative suspect, but must let him go. When a third child is reported missing, the pressure from the police, the press, the population in Aberdeen and MacRae's own desire to stop the killings reaches a fevered pitch.

This five CD abridged edition, six hours long, is read by John Sessions. Since the location for the story is Aberdeen, Scotland, I knew that the narrator would have to do an accent, but I was delighted to hear the high quality of John Sessions' effort. There are many characters in this mystery and Sessions gives a first-rate performance, getting the different accents perfectly while still managing to show the delicate turns of emotions for each character. On top of that, the small forays into humor are done with such expertise that the listener can't help but be drawn into the story and kept there.

I found it almost impossible to interrupt listening to COLD GRANITE to take any kind of a break. At the same time, the six hours both flew by and made me feel as if I lived a lifetime within the story.

Stuart MacBride has written a solid and exciting book, permitting the extremely alert reader the challenge of discovering the clues with the police. Though some of the secondary characters are a bit over the top, they work perfectly within this story. All are realistic and extremely interesting.

This is Stuart MacBride's first murder mystery and I am thrilled to have found this fantastic writer at the start of his writing career. I intend to haunt the bookshelves for any trace of his next endeavor. COLD GRANITE is a wonderful read!
