Andrew Joseph 'AJ' Schwarz was a ten-year-old boy who never stood a chance either in life or in death. He was a small, quiet, and unassuming boy who never brought any trouble home. He was hardworking and always eager to please. No one ever suspected of there being anything wrong with him. It wasn't until May 2 1993 when his stepmother found his body in their aboveground swimming pool that questions started to arise about AJ's life.

The police knew something was horribly wrong the minute they interviewed Jessica Schwarz, AJ's stepmother. She would have AJ do her will by making him do hard labor around the house and threatening him with not letting him go to school if he ever misbehaved through her impossible conditions.

He was physically and mentally abused and no one did anything to protect him. There were clues all around and yet no one took the first step. No child should have gone through what AJ did, but what makes this even scarier is that Jessica never felt that she did anything wrong.

She provided for her two natural children, but when it came to AJ he was treated worse than Cinderella. She carried this hubris even after she was arrested and on trial. The outcome was almost a foregone conclusion, but it still shocks to this day.

Scott H Cupp was the chief prosecutor on the case and a strong advocate for children's rights. Together with Carol J Rothgeb he recounts the life of this case as that of AJ, a boy who never got a chance to be truly happy. Everything is shown through eyewitness testimony and court transcripts as well as from those who are still punishing themselves for missing what seemed to be obvious abuse signals.

This book should serve as a wake-up call for those who feel that they can't make a difference when it comes to do something against child cruelty. Someone could have saved AJ, but didn't. Let's work so it doesn't happen again.
