FBI agent Alex Cross is pulled away from his family and an assignation with his latest lady friend during his vacation in Disneyland to answer the FBI's call for him to look at what's adding up to be a serial killer in Los Angeles. The victims are high-profile women, all successful in the entertainment industry, happy mothers and wives, all murdered and then their faces are slashed.

The killer has been sending emails to an LA columnist about the murders. All the emails are written out as scenes of the murders and are signed Mary Smith. But something in the emails seems off to Alex and he's the only person to suspect the killer is really a male.

Though the media and the public are clamoring for the killer to be found, Alex is ostracized by the LAPD and has to work on his own. Soon the strain on him worsens when he is suddenly forced to fight for custody of his youngest child. But as crucial as that battle is for him, as torn as he is by the prospect of losing custody of his youngest son and missing out on the day-to-day growing up of his two older kids, Alex knows that the killer's madness is escalating and that he must remain involved in the case to help stop the murders.

This is the 11th of the Alex Cross books and I'm thrilled to report that everything readers loved in this series is again finally back! The last book was a terrible disappointment to me and I feared that author James Patterson had lost interest in the character and the series. But in MARY, MARY we are once again able to read about the Alex Cross and the well-crafted mysteries that glued fans to each installment.

As much of the book is about Alex's family and friends as it is about the investigation of the murders, and the mix of the professional and personal works well. Sampson, Alex's former police partner, shows up in this story reminding us what a truly great relationship these two men had. Hope comes forward that the men might again work together.

MARY, MARY is once again the fast-paced, enjoyable, solidly written Alex Cross books that were so engrossing in earlier installments. I recommend this book for old fans of the series and for newcomers too. MARY, MARY is fine reading!
