Kate Connor is a suburban mother of two with all the accompanying baggage -- the husband, the housecleaning, the trips to drop the teenager at the mall, and researching the history of an evil demon bent on taking over the world so that she can be ready to kill him before he kills her family.

Oh, wait, maybe that last bit isn't part of life for most suburban moms but it works for Kate. Her husband is running for county attorney and he calls to tell her he's invited some important people over for dinner. Tonight. Not a problem until that demon bursts in through the kitchen window forcing Kate to kill him to protect herself. Now she has to clean the kitchen and hide the demon while getting a dinner party ready. Yikes.

A dinner party with a dead demon in the pantry is just the start of this ride. Julie Kenner has created a wonderful set of characters that seem like people you'd know. They use pop culture references that you might, they have the same, well, most of the same problems of child care and jobs and getting the guy to fix the window today. I'd say that finding the demon before he raises an army of the dead to take over the world is probably not something that we all have to deal with, but Kenner makes it seem like fun!

OK, so not all of demon hunting is running around kicking demons in the head, although Kate certainly wishes that were true while going through the dusty boxes of documents in the cold basement of the local cathedral trying to figure out what it is that the demon is looking for in her small suburban town.

If you like Buffy and Angel, you'll enjoy CARPE DEMON, subtitled The Adventures of a Demon Hunting Soccer Mom. And it has in fact been optioned by Warner Bros Pictures for Chris Columbus (director of the first two Harry Potter movies) and I can't wait to see it and to read the next adventure.
