Emma Fielding is showing her dig at Penitence Point, Maine, to some of the attendees at an archaeological society meeting, The meeting is to celebrate the work of Julius Garrison, an ageing, eminent member, who is disliked by many, including Emma. A winter storm sets in while they are on their way back to the country hotel which is hosting the meeting.

That night, Emma cannot sleep, so she goes for a walk toward the lake. She has turned back when she hears what sounds like a shot. The next morning, she learns that the body of Dr Garrison has been found on the frozen lake. Emma was seen arguing with Garrison at Penitence Point the day before, so, of course, she is considered a suspect by the local police.

The meeting may be that of a professional organization, but the attendees act like any group of people who attend any convention, whether it be mystery, science fiction, or professional. There is the annual poker game, during which the group of friends catch up on each other's lives during the past year. And there's the group which always seems to be at the bar, also talking to friends and acquaintances, as well as the people who play practical jokes on each other during seminar papers.

Emma has just attained tenure at her small New England college. She is getting a bit restless and wants to use her archaeological expertise to become a forensic archaeologist, but she doesn't know how her friends will react.

Cameron has brought us another episode in the life of Emma Fielding. Some of her back story is brought to light, making her more human. As in the other four entries in the series, the setting is vivid and the characters many and varied. This series continually improves with each new entry.
