It has been a long time since I read the first of the popular Mitchell and Markby series by Ann Granger, SAY IT WITH POISON, and this audio version of THAT WAY MURDER LIES, admirably narrated by Judith Boyd, provided an excellent opportunity to catch up a little.

Meredith Mitchell, a former British consul now working in the Foreign Office in London (a career not unlike that of the author), is engaged to marry Detective Superintendent Alan Markby who works in the village of Bamford in the Cotswolds. One of her colleagues, Toby Smythe, back in London to await his next posting, asks her to get Alan to intervene in a case involving some relatives who live in his patch, namely Toby's uncle Jeremy Jenner, a wealthy former businessman and his second wife Alison.

Alison has been receiving poison pen letters from someone aware that 25 years ago she stood trial for the murder of her aunt, Freda Kemp, whose body was found lying in her garden pond in Cornwall, having suffered a head injury. Alison was acquitted and has always believed the death was an accident, but the letter writer rejects this view and threatens revenge.

Initially reluctant to become involved, Markby has no option when a few days later a body is found on the Jenner property, arranged in a style to invoke memory of Freda Kemp's death. Markby and his team, notably a female officer who is new to the district, investigate the local suspects and look into the London life of Jeremy's daughter Fiona.

Meanwhile, Meredith and Toby travel to Cornwall to see what they can find out about the death of Freda Kemp, and whether anyone there still remembers the case or cares about the outcome of Alison's case.

THAT WAY MURDER LIES is primarily a police procedural, but an intelligent amateur sleuth angle is also present, of course, due to the involvement of Meredith and Toby. The author combines these elements well and the resulting mix is very enjoyable as the plot hastens towards its dramatic conclusion. I also enjoyed the combination of the investigation with the developments in the lives of the main characters.

Ann Granger already has many dedicated fans, but if you like British mysteries and haven't already tried her, you should. I will certainly be looking for further audio versions in this series as the narrator, Judith Boyd, hit just the right note.
