The biggest thrill in being a serial killer is when they exert their will over their helpless victims and listening to their pleas to try to save their lives. The captor gets to control his captive's every moment, feeding on their fears, and only they know what is going to happen next.

When the New York police department caught the notorious serious killer known in the media as Howdy Doody everyone started to breathe a sigh of relief. He was a sociopath who would string up his victims as marionettes, humiliate them, and then let them die a slow death. The NYPD caught the killer red-handed, but did they?

Their prisoner lies brain-damaged at the prison, but there is a rash of new victims carried out by a copycat killer in the same fashion including details that were never released to the press. Could the killer actually have a partner or is it something worse?

Detective Morgan 'Mo' Ford is perplexed with what he has learned about the case so far, not knowing that this is the beginning of something worse. If he does not get to the bottom of this case rather quickly someone close to him may die and the puppet master wins. It is something he cannot let happen.

Daniel Hecht takes his time telling a multilayered story of a troubled, yet human individual who is trying to get his life in order with all of the things that keep coming his way. The author goes into overkill describing Mo's life and his personal situations but it proves to be valuable in the story. Knowing how the case takes a toll in the detective's life give the story a sense of realism in what proves to be a rather unusual killing spree.

PUPPETS is filled with suspense and twists and turns as the truth is slowly revealed into a shocking scenario. Serial killer and thriller fans (as well as those with sick minds like me) will not be disappointed. The only drawback is that the book is about a hundred pages to long. A lot could have been resolved in fewer pages. Regardless, I would recommend this book.
