Harry Bosch is back in the LAPD. After three years out, he's returning to the force to work in the Open-Unsolved Unit with his former partner Kiz Rider.

But not everyone is pleased to see him there. And Harry and Kiz face a huge challenge on their first cold case as they try to track down the murderer of 16-year-old Rebecca Verloren. The mixed race teenager was abducted from her bedroom in 1988 and found dead several days later on a nearby hillside.

Advances in DNA and the like present Harry and Kiz with what looks like a promising case against a lowlife named Roland Mackey, whose blood was found on the murder weapon. But piecing the case together turns out to be a long and frustrating business for 'the Closers.'

They must interview as many of those involved in the original case as they can, starting with Becky's parents -- the mother who has kept her bedroom exactly as it was and the father who has lost everything -- and the schoolfriends whose lives were changed inexorably when their best friend was murdered. And as the case progresses, Bosch and Rider start to detect some unwelcome influences they hadn't expected.

THE CLOSERS is a slow burner, but it's also a book by a master craftsman. It's impeccably written and plotted, with the twists, turns and dead ends that you would expect from police work. So in many ways it's a linear plot, beginning with Harry's return and ending with the resolution of the case. It's in no way a 'biff, bang, thump' book, and indeed the first 50 or so pages are pretty slow. But it's a tale to stick with as it will reel you in relentlessly.

Cold case mysteries seems to be the present fad, but Connelly's book is far ahead of the pack. I was a late arrival to Connelly and the Bosch series, but I'm glad to have found them.
