In this long-running futuristic and romantic police procedural series Nora Roberts, in her guise of J D Robb, has entertained readers with the cases of tough-as-nails New York Police and Security Department lieutenant Eve Dallas. During the run of the series, Eve has softened up (but not without a fight) when it comes to her personal life but when it comes to justice and crime fighting, she is a pit bull who does not let go of her prey.

Those instincts are going to be very important in this story because this is one that she cannot afford to lose. In the 20th book of the IN DEATH series the humor is toned down dramatically as Eve investigates the brutal decimation of an ordinary family while they were sleeping. Through a stroke of serendipity ten-year-old Nixie Swisher managed to escape the slaughter but not before witnessing the death of her parents.

This case will hit close to home to Eve and her Irish zillionaire husband Roarke, who never experienced a loving childhood. They will give their lives to protect Nixie and face things they have never experienced or considered before as they bring the girl to their home in order to protect her. SURVIVOR IN DEATH is a much darker novel but fans will not be disappointed.

What makes this series appealing is in the secondary characters that provide a breath of fresh air into Eve's life. It is always a thrill to see what is going on in their lives and I always look forward to see them again. The book's villains deserve absolutely no sympathy from readers but knowing how hard the cops are working to close the case and try to give Nixie a chance of a childhood is a pleasure in itself.

Roarke and Eve's past are recounted once again to show how it parallels with Nixie's, giving us a better appreciation for the characters. They have gone through a lot in 20 books where less than two years have transpired and there is still always something new to provide. This is a favorite series that still goes on strong and always manages to entertain no matter what the subject.

When it comes to crimes against children it is hard to be humorous but J D Robb manages to pull through with some light moments sprinkled throughout the book that helps the storyline. If you've yet to read one of her books, what is stopping you? Don't want to be caught with a guilty pleasure? Aw, c'mon. You will not regret it.
