Minneapolis homicide detectives Leo Magozzi and Gino Rolseth are dealing with cold cases because there hasn't been a murder in the Twin Cities in several months, when the drought suddenly ends. Lily Gilbert finds her husband Morey, the 85-year-old owner of a plant nursery, dead and lying face up in the rain near his greenhouse. Not only that, another pair of homicide detectives, Aaron Langer and Johnny MacLaren, are investigating the murder of 89-year-old Arlen Fischer whose body is later found on the railroad tracks.

Marty Pullman, an ex-narcotics cop, is about to eat his gun, when he is summoned to the Gilberts' home. His wife, now dead, was the daughter of Morey and Lily Gilbert. He is pulled out of his suicidal state by his affection for his in-laws. Jack Gilbert, a personal injury lawyer and the estranged son of the elderly couple, also turns up at the nursery.

Two more 80-somethings are found dead in their apartments. The only apparent connection among the four is their age. Magozzi has been seeing Grace MacBride, one of the principals of the software firm known as Monkeewrench. Grace and her partners are developing very sophisticated recognition software and other aids to help police find missing persons.

Leo asks Grace to dig into the databases and come up with the connection to help find the murderer(s). She has to work fast before another murder occurs and before she and her partners Annie Belinksy, Harley Davidson and Roadrunner start on their planned trip in a specially equipped RV. They have developed the special software and installed it in the vehicle so they can travel to other cities and use the programs wherever needed.

LIVE BAIT is a good solid police procedural with likable characters and a plausible plot. I remember being very impressed with MONKEEWRENCH, the first book by this mother and daughter writing team. LIVE BAIT is not as impressive but it is still a good read.
