Lucy Nan Pilgrim is having a extremely odd week, starting when a very senile old woman appears at her house, looking for Mama. That's unsettling enough, but things get weirder when she turns out to be someone who had disappeared from that very house as a young child.

But before anyone can piece together the story from the woman's remaining memories, the poor thing is murdered. And just to ice the cake her new boarder, the one with the changeable hair and jewelry, claims to be a guardian angel come to protect Lucy and the community from a gathering evil.

Lucy isn't sure she believes that story, not even when the mysterious guest conjures up a set of strawberry muffins that could only be described as heavenly and then sits smiling as her clothing slowly changes from color to color. Then another death by not-so-accidental fall suggests that there are indeed dark dealings going on in placid Stone's Throw. Time for Lucy, Ellis, Augusta, and the members of the Thursdays (the book club that meets on Monday afternoons) to swing to the rescue!

TOO LATE FOR ANGELS is the fifth book in the Augusta Goodnight mysteries. Although Augusta the angel gets top billing, it's really Lucy and her friend Ellis who do most of the legwork, while Augusta sits in the background changing her color scheme and occasionally whipping up a miracle in the nick of time.

Although I felt that Lucy and Ellis were a little quick to accept Augusta's story, neither the supernatural nor the religious elements overpower what is at heart a cute, if not very deep, little cozy. Enough detail is provided for new readers to be able to start with this book in the series. For old readers, several calorie-laden recipes are included by popular request.
