Anne Harlowe has become a widow much too early. Alone and yet not alone, she has two children, but the world seems to be made up of couples. Overwhelmed by life, Anne is tending to her kids, her saleable craft projects, her house that needs lots of repairs and what tomorrow will bring. She could have done something about the blood clot in her husband's lung if only she had known. Anne is a worrier and would have insisted that he see a doctor.

Anne's neighbors and friends tell her that letting go will make life bearable again. She is approaching the one year anniversary of Andre's death. Anne keeps her husband's voice message on the cell phone; it is such a comfort. Throughout the year, she calls it to be able to hear him again. One last time, she decides to call. Imagine her surprise, when a voice answers. She thinks this may be a sign -- perhaps her husband is going to give her directions and tell her what to do next.

Her next door neighbor and childhood friend Merlin asks Anne to work as a waitress at his catered event. She does not want to go but really needs the money. Anne literally runs into the owner of the house. Immediate spark!

Circumstances allow Thom, the owner of the house, and Anne to meet again. He has thought about her more than once. Currently, Thom is in a blah relationship. There is no chemistry between them and it has been a matter of convenience for him; he needs to end it. It probably has gone on this long because his mother and sister both adore this woman; they also think she has the right social status.

This is a fun, kick-back romance. It is old-fashioned yet current. Thom and Anne need to work through their economic differences and also Anne's relationship with her deceased husband. One of the best parts of the story is Thom's relationship with Anne's two children. He teaches Anne's son how to tie his shoe and it is a warm feeling when these four people are in the same room. Magic and fun!
