Historical mystery writer, Maggie Kelly receives an early morning hysterical phone call from her editor Bernice Toland-James. Bernice, a woman who loves to party and drink, woke up to find herself covered in blood from the body of the man lying next to her. To Bernice's shock, the man is her ex-husband Benny who drowned some seven years earlier.

Maggie immediately goes to Bernice's luxurious apartment with Alex Blake, who is the Viscount Saint Just, and his sidekick Sterling Balder. The two men are fictional characters who popped out of the series that Maggie wrote earlier to become real people.

Maggie created the Viscount Saint Just as a great detective, so he takes command of the investigation into Benny's death. After running around the apartment disturbing evidence, looking at the bloody dead body, and trying to calm the upset Bernice, Maggie, Saint Just, and Sterling finally decide to call in the help of the New York Police Department.

As luck would have it, in walks NYPD Lieutenant Steve Wendell who just happens to have a relationship with Maggie. This just complicates matters more because Maggie daydreams about having a romantic fling with both the very real Steve and her own make-believe character, Saint Just.

Meanwhile, back at the sub-let apartment that Saint Just shares with his sidekick Sterling Balder, someone has broken in. Nothing was taken, but the apartment was thoroughly ransacked. But what could a thief be looking for in an apartment owned by the widow woman who sub-let it to go to Florida to help her sickly sister?

Maggie's problems are certainly piling up: A recently deceased body of a man who was supposed to have died seven years earlier, an editor who doesn't remember what happened the night before, a ransacked apartment, and two attractive men who are both vying for Maggie's interest. What will Maggie do? She hasn't a clue.

MAGGIE WITHOUT A CLUE by Kasey Michaels is the third book in this series. Ms Michaels' idea of bringing Maggie's two fictional characters to life to help her solve mysteries is a fun one. The problem is that Maggie takes a back seat to Saint Just and doesn't trust her instincts in dealing with the murders. She keeps playing the part of the frail woman. I found this odd since it is Maggie who created the wonderful detective with his amazing powers of deduction in the first place.

This enjoyable cozy is not for a person looking for a real mystery, as there are too many holes in the story. And the way the threesome walk around Benny's murder scene, destroying all the clues, will make a die-hard mystery lover cringe.

Read MAGGIE WITHOUT A CLUE for sheer fun of it. No sharp mystery here, it's simply a cute story with a different twist.
